Team member styles

Issues

  • Enormous range!
  • Look at table on types of contract which raises some points
  • Local context will influence national staff styles and expectations
  • ‘Difficult’ employees may perform their role well or they may be ‘difficult’ because they are in the wrong role

Way forward:

  • Recognise that range will be there
  • Be realistic!
  • Employees with a different style to your own, should be equally valued. National staff often bring in qualities that are not readily appreciated i.e. working with local communities, securing resources in a competitive environment, interpreting government / militia reactions and requirements. They may not however understand or adopt expected Western work ethics i.e. time keeping, detailed reporting. It is unlikely that a working style can be changed in a short and intensive period of employment – therefore it’s important to find ways to work round this and play to people’s strengths.
