Standby

He got as far as the airport departure lounge before being told that the programme had been suspended. He was asked to go home and stand by. He had no written contract and asked for clarification of his status. Was he going to be paid? If so, what could he do at home to help the organisation? If not, was he free to seek or accept alternative employment? All he received was an angry phone call from the organisation during which it was implied that he was not showing the required level of humanitarian commitment, and indeed just wanted to be paid for doing nothing.
