Salaries may be reviewed for a number of reasons:

Individual ad-hoc reviews

  • To correct errors at recruitment
  • To reflect promotion or re-grading of post

Adjustments to pay scales

  • to correct anomalies
  • to bring in line with other organisations

Annual increments

  • fixed, automatic or performance related?
  • but for how many years?

Cost of living

  • especially important where this high inflation in payment currency
  • same percentage for all?
  • challenge of assessing

Risks include:

  • Reviewing salaries too often and thereby raising expectations of equally regular reviews in future especially if each review results in increases.
  • Reviewing salaries too infrequently and thereby creating resentment, especially if team members feel the salaries are unjust.
