Training needs

New team members should have most of the skills and knowledge required to do the work they have been recruited for. There may however be gaps.

Such gaps may range from straighforward technical issues, for example how to operate the particular type of radio being used in the programme, through to more general subjects such as the mandates of the UN, International and Non-governmental organisations involved in the programme.

Organising such training may not seem to be a priority in the initial stages of an emergency – but failure to organise may waste even more time and energy even in the medium term if team members create unnecessary problems or can not perform.

Training needs will be identified during induction, briefing, handover and the probation period. They may include any of the topics in the induction, briefing and handover checklist in resources.
