Redundancy

Key questions Aim Risks in getting it wrong
How will you manage reducing the size of the team when the programme slows down or closes?

Staffing levels are appropriate to programme needs.

Decisions are taken as quickly and as transparently as possible

Departing team members

  • are either redeployed or are made redundant.
  • receive their full entitlements
  • leave with their self-respect and as little ill-feeling as possible.

Too large a team

Uncertainty leading to poor team morale and risk of losing those whom you hoped to retain

Disputes and court cases

A declared need to reduce staff or restructure is sometimes used as a means of dismissing a team member where there is insufficient grounds to dismiss them otherwise – this is unprofessional and may result in claims for unfair dismissal.
